A size label is only useful when you know which measurements it represents. Your pet might wear a small in one garment and a medium in another, so take fresh measurements and compare them with the chart for the exact item you want.
This guide explains the common measurements you may see when shopping for pet clothes and harnesses. Always follow the individual product's measuring diagram first: measurement points, fitting allowances and adjustment ranges can differ.
Get ready before measuring
Use a flexible tailor's tape, a place to record measurements and the product's size chart. Choose a quiet space with a nonslip surface, and let your pet stand naturally if they are comfortable doing so. A second person can help keep the session calm without holding your pet in a forced position.
Keep the tape flat and untwisted. It should make gentle contact without pressing into the skin or compressing the coat. Take a break if your pet becomes uncomfortable, and never leave a tape measure within chewing reach.
Chest circumference
For many products, the chest measurement is taken around the broadest part of the ribcage, usually just behind the front legs. Check the listing's diagram because the intended position can vary.
Bring the tape around the body without pulling it tight. Read and record the circumference, including the unit. Repeat the measurement to check consistency rather than relying on a single hurried reading.
Neck circumference
Measure at the position shown in the product's instructions. A shirt opening and a harness strap may sit at different points, so do not assume one neck measurement fits every product.
Keep the tape comfortable and avoid tightening it around the throat. If the listing specifies an allowance or a particular fitting method, follow it. Do not add an arbitrary allowance to every measurement, especially if the chart already includes one.
Back length
For many garments, back length runs along the back from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Follow the exact start and end points shown on the listing rather than measuring from the head or including the tail.
Measure while your pet stands naturally, without stretching them into position. Four-legged garments may require additional measurements, so check the whole chart before choosing a size.
Compare your notes with the exact size chart
Record every measurement with its unit and compare all required dimensions, not just the closest one. Check whether the chart describes the animal's measurements or the finished garment's dimensions; these are not interchangeable.
For an adjustable harness, check that all relevant measurements fall within the stated adjustment ranges. For clothing, consider the listed fit instructions and fabric details rather than assuming the material stretches.
If your pet falls between sizes or one measurement fits a different size from another, follow the product's specific guidance. If there is no clear recommendation, ask us before ordering rather than automatically sizing up or down.
Do not guess missing units or unclear information
If a chart does not state whether measurements are in centimetres or inches, pause and ask for clarification. The same applies to contradictory weight ranges, missing dimensions or a diagram that does not match the written chart.
Weight and breed references can provide context, but they do not replace the measurements required by the product. Keep a copy of your notes so you can explain which details need checking.
Check the fit when the item arrives
Follow the fitting instructions and check that your pet can stand, walk, sit and lie down naturally. Look for rubbing, pressure, slipping, restricted movement or fabric catching beneath the paws. Clothing should not obstruct toileting or cover the eyes, ears, nose or mouth.
For a harness, check the strap positions, fastenings and attachment points before each walk. Do not rely on a generic fit rule if the manufacturer provides a specific one, and do not assume a walking harness is a vehicle restraint.
Remove the item if your pet shows discomfort. Recheck measurements as your pet grows or their body shape changes.
